Celebrex: Side Effects

Expected side effects of Celebrex COX 2 drug use may include:

  • Stomach pain
  • Sinus inflammation
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Indigestion

Recently reported but disputed side effects of Celebrex

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Blood Clots
  • High blood pressure
  • Seizure
  • Kidney damage
  • Liver damage
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Birth defects

Results released in late December 2004 study conducted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) show alarming evidence that Celebrex side effects may be more serious than just previously known gastrointestinal side effects. The NCI, recently testing the drug in higher doses for its effects on reducing the development of colon polyps, halted the use of Celebrex because of heart attack risks. It was discovered that the COX 2 type pain medication, Celebrex, increased heart attack, stroke and blood clot risk by nearly thee-fold in cases where patients were administered high doses of Celebrex (800 milligrams) over a prolonged period. Celebrex related heart attack risk more than doubled when patients took doses of more than 400 milligrams.

These new risks strike parallels to the similar blockbuster-selling COX 2 inhibitor drug Vioxx, marketed and manufactured by Merck. Vioxx was voluntarily recalled in the fall of 2004 after cardiovascular risks were also discovered with the drug.

Pfizer, the manufacturer of the COX 2 inhibitor drug Celebrex, has made no plans to pull their product from the market. The company has sited other studies where Celebrex side effects, like increased heart attack risk, were not discovered. Additional studies are being conducted on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including the COX 2 inhibitor Celebrex, to make sense of the contradictory results.
